Jul. 14th, 2010 07:40 pmIn the office yesterday morning I got a tip-off from Ray, a Southampton fan, that they might not be bringing their first team to play Hawks in last night's friendly. According to him, the Saints first team were on tour in Switzerland, so we were likely to face an XI of trialists and Academy lads plus Anthony Pulis.
At lunchtime in the canteen, the Dutchman I'd watched the Slovakia game with came up and said "Very disappointing on Sunday. I agree with Johan Cruyff - they played anti-football." Then before the Hawks v Southampton game, as I was walking along past the terrace to the snack bar, Mark greeted me with a stentorian roar of "YOUR TEAM ARE A DISGRACE! THUGS!" As I went over to say hello to him and Dave, Mark added "THEY PISSED ON THE MEMORY OF JOHNNY REP, RUUD KROL AND CO!"
What could I say? It was true. Dave said it was a scandal that Howard Webb didn't send off Nigel de Jong : I replied that I wished he had, then the others might have calmed down. Mark confirmed that the Saints first team were in Switzerland - "getting humped by FC Thun" - and that tonight's visitors were trialists and Academy players. Then Trev on the PA revealed that Anthony Pulis was indeed in the side.
The game looked like the friendly it was, a certain competitive edge was missing, but the Hawks turned in a polished performance to win 2-1. Our star new signing Sammy Igoe played well and scored a brilliant goal straight through the Saints keeper's legs; Bobby Hopkinson, our other major recruit of the summer, also looked in fine form.
