The ladies in my team - who don't watch the matches, remember - were full of gallows jokes about how England were going to be knocked out this afternoon, unlike true fan Lin whose optimism was unquenched. Bev knocked off alongside me at 1pm, though she was at pains to stress that her early finish was for unrelated reasons and that she wasn't going to watch the footie. "We all know you'll be watching with your beers and your hat, scarf and rattle really," Sue said to her.

Today the office firewall wouldn't let me on the Wimbledon website - some days you get lucky, others you don't - so the first I knew of how Kim was getting on was when I arrived home and turned on the telly to see her fairly comfortably ahead. She held on to win of course :D

Rather than tune in to the England game, I opted for Algeria v USA on the red button - "just to be different," I posted on Twitter and Facebook. Actually as a Holland-supporting Welshman with an affection for the underdog, who's had a soft spot for Algeria since West Germany and Austria stitched them up at España '82, it made perfect sense for me to choose the Desert Warriors over the Three Lions, in the hope of seeing Algeria break Africa's last-sixteen duck. Alas, it wasn't to be, as the USA dominated for most of the game; Algeria were lucky to hold them for 90 minutes, and although Algeria came close at the start of injury time there could be no complaints about the US goal seconds later.

Ah well, fingers crossed for better fortunes for the plucky Serbs tonight...
