May. 31st, 2010 10:46 amTo Westleigh Park last night for the Hawk girls' end of season party. They'd won the Hampshire FA five-a-side tournament at Basingstoke last weekend, so did have one piece of silverware (and a bloody big one at that) to display on the table.
I joined Jodie, Billie and Becky at a table; Jodie noted with approval that I, like her, was on the mixed fruit Kopparberg. It was good to see Galey and main club physio Phil Ashwell there. Trev made the opening speech, speaking for pretty much everyone in the room when he said that if you'd offered us third place at the start of the season we'd have snatched your hand off, but because our good run had then made us believe we could actually win the title, sliding down to third over the last few weeks had created an air of despondency around everyone - something that, in cold light of late May, was a disappointment to those in charge. His announcement that we'd no longer be playing at Fort Blockhouse as the site was to be sold got a couple of cheers, prompting him to comment "Oh, it wasn't that bad, was it?" After saying he was hoping to get the use of Westleigh Park a few more times next season, he announced that we'd be playing the rest of our home fixtures at HMS Collingwood - "they've got floodlights, it's a good ground." One more reason for me to move to Fareham, then. Trev finished by thanking several of the players and staff for the effort they put in for the club off pitch, and gave Becky and me a mention.
Next up was Dick, who began by calling for a round of applause for Trev, saying none of us know just how much time and hard work he puts in for the Ladies' side, then echoed his comments about the team's performance this season. Dick said his personal highlight of the campaign had been Lizzie's rocket shot in the FA Women's Cup tie at Cardiff - "I don't know anybody who can strike a ball as hard as Lizzie Laws!" Dick presented an award to Stacie as Most Improved Player of the Season and read out the top three of Players' Player of the Season. Third was Jenna F who was absent - "she chose Lady Gaga over us" - then Dick announced that Charley had pipped Sadie to the title by one vote. As they're a cohabiting couple, Sadie moaned that Charley was never going to let her hear the end of it. Dick couldn't resist pointing out that he was the only man there wearing a suit, since someone had to keep the dress standards up (the rest of us men were all in casual clothes; Trev's shirt with the top two buttons open and gold pendant had led a couple of the players to liken him to Del Boy Trotter). The DJ chipped in "Well done to Dick on his suit, but it has to go back to Mothercare on Tuesday."
Billie stepped up and said she just wanted to thank a few people and present them with gifts. After making presentations to Trev and Phil, she finished by calling me up and saying thanks for all the match reports. She handed me a goodie bag as Dave took a snap of us. The goodies were a pen and reporter's notebook and two bottles of pear Kopparberg.
Then it was on with disco, and the occasional bit of karaoke. Jodie and Telé again insisted I open the karaoke - "Set the standard" - so I did Hi Ho Silver Lining, changing the hook line to 'Hi ho, Havant 'Looville' and getting the girls to sing along with that bit. Charley's rendition of Pink's Get The Party Started and Sadie's Black Eyed Peas number were the DJ's favourites, beating a strong challenge from Trevor singing a Michael Bublé song. Near the end the DJ said he needed two couples, to sing the original and rude versions of Summer Nights; Charley and Trev teamed up for the clean one and went down a storm, then Stacie and I both individually stepped forward volunteering for the rude one so we ended up singing it together - it was hysterical.
