Few Hawks expected much out of the visit of the division's runaway champions Newport County this afternoon...

Met up with the usual crowd in the clubhouse for pre-match jars; the big news was that I'm about to get some more Hawk company at my workplace, as Simon got the job! It became a running joke with the others that he's to be my new manager and I'll have to bow and scrape to him, but in fact he isn't in my department. We watched the closing stages of the Ross County v Celtic Scottish Cup semi-final and celebrated the underdogs' second goal. I thought of [livejournal.com profile] kels450 with a smile.

Entered the ground fairly early as we were expecting Newport to bring a lot. I made my way up to my usual seat in front of the press box, and immediately bumped into the back of a laptop belonging to someone from Newport that was jutting out in front of the table edge. Then, while I was up on my feet copying down the teams ready for my texting duties, one guy from Newport came up and insisted on squeezing past me just so he could lean on my seat just to say hello to their two media men; one of said media men turned the team sheet I was copying from around, forcing me to read upside-down, when he could have taken another from the large pile; and, soon after the first bloke had moved on, a youth from Newport in an Argentina shirt decided he too wanted to lean on my seat to talk to the press men, and kicked over both my cans of drink (thankfully unopened) in the process. To cap it all, when I'd finished transcribing the teams and sat down, I bumped that guy's bloody laptop again and he actually asked me to stop doing that. There was no way I could sit there and avoid bumping his laptop, the seats to the right of me were reserved for Hawk personnel, and the one to my left was bang next to a largish group of Newport fans. If they want the whole bastard area, I thought, they can have it (Hitchin Geordie wasn't with us today so I was really on my own), and moved to a different section of the stand altogether where some Hawks I knew were sitting. As kick-off drew nearer I was desperate for Hawks to win and maybe take some of the arrogance out of these loathsome creatures.

The first half came and went, score still 0-0, and I, like those around me, were thinking that if we could hold on for the point we'd have done well. Then, five minutes after the restart, Muzzy Tiryaki scored with a pearler. Celebration all round in the stand, but there was still a lot of time to go. From that point on, for the rest of the game Mike waxed lyrical about how Hawks always play well against good teams, but no-one would have predicted what came next - another beauty from Muzzy; then Wes Fogden struck on 79 minutes to make it three. By now the Hawk hardcore behind the goal were filling the place with renditions of the Johnny Cash chant and Under The Moon Of Love. To top off an amazing match, with three minutes left Jay Gasson, who'd not long come on as sub, hooked home a lovely fourth.

Fair play to the Newport fans, they'd come to have a party and didn't let the result poop it, they clapped their team off with chants of 'E-i-e-i-o' and 'We love you Newport' and one of their fans shook hands with me on my way out saying "Best team we've faced all season".

This truly was one of those 'I Was There' matches.

East Stirlingshire drew 2-2 at Berwick, a creditable away point. On my way walking down the main road, Bob pulled over and offered me a lift to Portsmouth harbour.
