Aug. 5th, 2009 05:46 pmTo Westleigh Park last night for Hawks Ladies' friendly with Brighton. There was a HawkSupport meeting going on at the same time, so several of the HWFC regulars were hanging around outside the ground waiting for that when I went in - I got comments of "Behave yourself, Wilhelmus, I've heard about you and those young ladies" and "Keep it in your trousers."
The Brighton line-up did include Sally. Said hello to her as she walked along the touchline about a quarter of an hour before kick-off. Asked Trev how the girls had got on at the Launton five-a-side on Sunday : the B team, despite the lack of a real keeper - they all took turns - won the tournament! A quick chat with Jo before she made her way to the dug-out. She said I'd been missed; I explained I had to save my pennies for their away matches this month. "We still won it for you," she smiled. I told Jo I'd heard of her goalkeeping heroics (she went in goal for the quarter-final, saving two penalties in the shoot-out, and the final which was won 1-0); she said she'd warned Sadie she was after her shirt...
With a few faces absent through work, injury or holiday Hawks introduced two more new girls from the Academy on the bench. The She-Gulls are a division higher than the Hawk girls, but our lasses performed much better. Jodie was fantastic in central defence again; I remarked to Val that she'd be playing there full time now. Lauren was again brilliant throughout. Poor Sam was injured in an off-the-ball collision on the half-hour; Chloe, one of the new duo, replaced her. Our girls deservedly took the lead on 36 minutes through Telé. All of us in the stand thought Chloe had got the final touch; how great that would have been, scoring on her debut.
It was all end to end stuff. Katie was brought on as a sub on the hour and dazzled again. I really think she and Lauren are going to be special. Despite Brighton pressure Hawks were looking good for the win until, with eight minutes left, a Brighton midfielder went on a long run down the wing and crossed to find ... Sally unmarked in the goalmouth. She tapped home from point blank range. It ended 1-1.
"It would have to be Sally," I remarked to Val. Trev expressed similar sentiments in the car park. There we saw the sad sight of Sam being carried to her parents' car, still in some pain; Trev confirmed that she'd done her ligaments and would miss the start of the season.
Simon only had to say "Red" to me twice this morning. At lunch time Val came to get me and rush down to the canteen for the union's prize draw for a weekend for two in Paris, which we were both automatically entered for as I'd recently joined up with Val as my refer-a-friend. She was so excited about the upcoming draw that Sue quipped that Val must be expecting me to take her if I won...We didn't win.
Finished the week's death batch around 1.45 pm - I'm back on the postcodes for the rest of the week. Liz warned me that I've got plenty of Welsh place names in tomorrow's batch, but I love doing Wales.
