Moseyed along to the Stokes Bay Festival this evening to see the Proclaimers. There was a homemade wooden sign by the entrance reading 'Welcome To Ducksville' with a picture of a duck with a pound sign on it - a reference to our local MP Peter Viggers, one of the first to be embroiled in the expenses scandal when his claim for a duck house was revealed.

As I walked on to the music tent Oysterband, coming to the end of their set, struck up a tune I knew. It was Blood Wedding, a song I'd only ever heard performed by Lady Winwood's Maggot, back in 1996. Oysterband gave a fine, spirited rendition of it, enough for me to make my way to the merchandise tent and ferret through their CDs until I found the song on the very last one I looked at. I'd always thought the singer of Lady Winwood's Maggot wrote Blood Wedding but it turns out Oysterband did.

Wandered around the various international food stalls until I reached a French one and tried their excellent Provençal potatoes. Just left of the music tent was the Iecchyd Da food stall, familiar from last year - couldn't resist a minted Welsh lamb burger. Downed my Coke just in time to take up a place at the very back of the tent.

The Proclaimers opened with a couple of songs that came from after the period when I bought their every record, so were unfamiliar to me but still great. Their third number, another late-period song Born Different, had me scurrying round to the merchandise tent for the CD. That was just as well, as from there I was able to find a spot that, though at the side, was closer and gave me a much better view than where I'd been before.

I was in place just in time for a majestic rendition of Letter From America, which was followed by my favourite, Cap In Hand. I got funny looks from one bloke for singing along, but people singing along is part of the live gig experience. If you want the music pure and free from audience interaction, listen to the CDs.

They went on to play a mixture of songs I knew from the first two albums and later ones, including a brilliantly scathing attack on radicals and socialists who accept honours from the Crown, sadly not on the CD I'd just bought. They introduced their band members, played a late-period love song and then struck up the intro to I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles). The place exploded! Everybody sang along with gusto.

The Proclaimers left the stage to a roaring ovation, roadies appeared and began clearing gear away but then the lads came back on to play The Joyful Kilmarnock Blues.

Beginning the walk home past the festival site I noticed several amusing banners had been put up along the fence, all mocking Viggers, including a spoof musical one : "Live Tonight - Peter Viggers and his band The Resignations". Great stuff.
