May. 6th, 2009 11:52 pmWent up to Andover this evening to see lovely Michelle turn out for Portsmouth Uni in their Hampshire League Cup Final against Salisbury. Made sure I arrived early, since the ground is a fair way from the station and I wanted to avoid a taxi fare and also get in some exercise by walking it. I managed to get to the ground on foot in less than 40 minutes, despite having to negotiate some pedestrian-unfriendly roads.
There was still three quarters of an hour to kick-off. The Uni team were already on the pitch warming up; when I arrived at pitchside Michelle waved to me, as did Flo, an old pal of mine. It was a pleasant surprise to see her as I didn't even know she played for them. Went up to the clubhouse for a Magners.
The Uni were on top for nearly all of the game, and Michelle and Flo could be pleased enough with their contributions even if they weren't as involved in the action as one might have hoped. Michelle had said she'd ask around to see if anyone had driven there and could give me a lift back to Portsmouth (I'd said I was willing to pay), but, alas, when she came over to pitchside at half time she told me everyone had come on the minibus, which was presumably full since she made no mention of there being a space for me.
So I had to leave the ground in the last minute of normal time - the Uni were 2-0 up and coasting and there was no way they were going to let in two during time added on; it just meant I missed seeing them lift the trophy (and lost the chance of a celebratory kiss) - to hop in a taxi back to the station, to catch a train to Salisbury that connected with the last direct service to Fareham. Then the taxi home from Fareham station cost a staggering £20. The things we do for love.
Got to go turn in.
