Just come from seeing the Gosport Amateur Operatic Society's performance of The Gondoliers at Ferneham Hall. Tess again asked if my mother was coming, so I explained she's at the Spalding Flower Festival. Sadly, the credit crunch has even bitten GAOS. The programme was scaled down this time - A5 instead of A4 - meaning there was no room for a plot synopsis, though on the inner front page the welcome blurb said the plot was "best told by the performers on stage, in their lyrical rendition".

The show was very jolly and well presented. Natalie Quantick was fantastic as Gianetta, getting to display her fine soprano voice to the full. Also superb were Andrew Wilcock's witty Duke of Plaza Toro and Elaine Clark, very regal as his Duchess, and Charles Etherington and Tom Vale's spirited portrayal of the Gondoliers was spot on. Moments before the final scene began, with the identity of the true prince about to be revealed, I worked out that it would be Luiz, allowing all three couples their happy ending.

On the walk to the taxi rank, in a side street just off West Street I saw a swish-looking dental surgery called the Westleigh Dental Practice, and its logo was a square of four blue and yellow quarters with letters on (the same design as the HWFC badge). One of the dentists there must surely be a Hawks fan.

At the taxi rank, passing the first cab whose driver was negotiating with two youths, one of whom was somewhat the worse for drink, I took the second, whose lady driver had a sad story to tell. Doing a special needs school run this morning she'd run over a cat and her whole day had just gone downhill from there, thanks to traffic jams, distraught kids, and non-earning flatmates not paying their way. The poor lady now had a thumping headache but, being self-employed, she can't afford to have tomorrow or Sunday off. When she dropped me at my front door the meter read £11.80; I gave her a score and told her "Have a peaceful weekend, take care."
