Apr. 14th, 2009 11:06 pmTo Westleigh Park this evening for Hawks Ladies' title six-pointer with Southampton Saints. Halfway through the walk from the station to the ground, rain started to spit and soon became heavier. Thankfully, by the time the rain really intensified, I was inside the ground and able to take cover in the stand.
I'd wondered how we'd fare with Jenna F on holiday and our recent wobble in form, but should have remembered the Hawk girls have a habit of rising to the occasion for crucial matches.
Malc was there; he and Rob spent the first half keeping tracks on Chelsea's fortunes against Liverpool via Rob's radio, and they weren't the only ones. The Hawk girls were on the offensive from the beginning, but saw all their attacks come to nothing until just before the 20 minute mark when Charlie stabbed home from a cross by Billie. We almost let Saints back into the game soon after, but then Jo scored with a beautiful volley and from then on Hawks had the upper hand. Liz made it 3-0 from the penalty spot, despite being made to retake the kick because Billie encroached.
Alas, Trev had been unable to persuade the tea hut staff to work tonight, so for half-time sustenance we had to make our way out to the clubhouse. I guess a Kopparberg and a packet of Worcester sauce crisps make a decent enough substitute for a Westlers hot dog :)
Didn't see Malc during the second half: I guess he decided to watch the second half of Chelsea v Liverpool in the clubhouse. There was no further score. Towards the end a Saints player committed a rough tackle on one of ours; we got a free kick, but when the ref didn't show a card Liz and Billie both gave the ref a piece of their mind and got a yellow card each for their trouble. Never mind, we got the win we needed, and only need four more points for promotion - and we can do it on Sunday as it's a double header. Fingers crossed.
The ref added on too much time for me to make the 9.49 train, so into the clubhouse for one more drink with the girls.
It rained all through the walk back to the station.
