Feb. 4th, 2009 04:40 pmBack at work this morning. Spoke to Sue #5 just before the start of the shift, and she offered me the chance to reduce my deficit hours by staying on till 3pm today and on Friday as we have a backlog of work, partly caused by a lot of people, like me, being unable to get in on Monday. She says there might be the opportunity to do the same on next week's early shifts but she won't know for sure till Friday.
Just after 2 pm Rosemary #2 went round telling us all that we'd be saying goodbye to Julie at 2.25. So when I got a first-time lady willing to do the survey at 2.22, I had to tell her, to her bemusement, that I'd call her back in a few minutes. Then at 2.25, when nothing seemed to be happening, I asked the supervisors where Julie's send-off was going to be and they said we weren't doing it as Julie was too nervous to do a group farewell. When I got back to my row muttering imprecations about this cock-up that had meant my needlessly messing a willing respondent around, Jane asked what was up. She said she'd been told just that moment about the cancellation of the goodbye; she reckoned the reason I wasn't told was because I was talking on the phone. To the very woman I now had to phone back.
Early in my interview with her, Lynda - who didn't know I was working late today - walked over to me, wrote on a slip of paper that she'd take over and told me to hand her my earphones. So I had to say 'excuse me' to the lady and explain to Lynda that I was staying on. (Even if I hadn't been, when Lynda came over it would have been too late for me to catch the earlier bus.)
The downside of working on late is you end up absolutely Hank Marvin by the time you get home. Got to go make a sandwich.
