Feb. 2nd, 2009 04:45 pmUnable to get to work this morning because of the snow and traffic jams on the roads. So I'll be going into deficit hours. Triffic.
Made my way down snowy pavements (admittedly taking the bus most of the way) to the town centre to post CDs to a couple of people who've kindly agreed to be emergency voters in my song contest, since a few of the originals have bailed out on me. From there, since I needed to get to a branch of WH Smith to pick up my latest Life On Mars DVD courtesy of the News of the World, I hopped on the ferry to Portsmouth.
Got the bus to Commercial Road and waited in the queue in Smith's only for the girl to tell me they'd already run out. She said they'd only had a small quantity this week and weren't expecting to get more, then just stood there looking hapless and apologetic. On my way out of the shop I found myself barging hard into the door.
On the ferry home I did get one lucky break. A few months ago I bought a ticket for Secret Love at the Kings this Friday, a show I'd now have had to miss through Statto duty. As the boat neared Gosport my phone rang - it was a lady from the Kings to say the show had been rescheduled for the summer as its star, Suzi Jari, is on jury service this week, and that my ticket would still be valid on the new date.
Back in Gosport, got chicken and chips for lunch from Chickoribs, then after sitting around seething with frustration for about an hour, dragged myself back down to the bus stop to make a tedious journey to Fareham, pursuing my last chance of getting that DVD. All through the bus ride I was convinced that the Fareham Smith's would also have run out and so my chance of ever completing the set would be shot. Spending £16 on the official release isn't an option for me for the foreseeable future. Thank frack, they still had plenty.
An hour or so's veg-out on the sofa in front of the telly, then back out again, to walk round to Katherine's and drop a CD in her letterbox.
So an impromptu day off, but not an enjoyable one.
Where's toffee crumble when you need it?
