Jan. 23rd, 2009 11:05 pmLogged on early this evening to learn the one game I was due to cover tonight was postponed, so rushed over to Westleigh Park to see the benefit match for Fudge, Hawks' youth team player who's just come out of his coma after being in a car crash two months ago.
Time for a quick Kopparberg in the clubhouse before entering the ground, where immediately inside the turnstiles I met several girls selling programmes and wielding buckets for donations to Fudge's benefit fund. One of them was Alex from the Hawks women's team; she persuaded me to buy two programmes.
The game saw the Academy's reserve team take on an All-Stars side. Of most interest to me on the latter's team sheet were two famous names from the Oranje's past, Ed de Goey in goal and Johnny Metgod (there because he's coach at Portsmouth) in midfield. Poor old Ed was clearly having an off day as he let in four during the first half, but Johnny showed his class with a beautiful goal, a diagonal screamer along the deck from 25 yards out into the bottom corner. Galey and Charlie Oatway also turned out for the All-Stars; Charlie played the whole 90 minutes and had a pretty good game. Could a return to competitive action be in the offing? Here's hoping. 'Nobby' the groundsman played the first half, while a couple of local radio and TV presenters played the second. Ed was replaced at half-time by Alan Knight, best known down our way as Portsmouth's long-serving keeper but remembered by Hawks fans for the sterling service he gave us between the posts in the 2000-01 season.
Rob, the women's team manager, popped into the stand for a chat with Trev, so I wished him and the girls good luck for Sunday. He'd forgotten that I'm unable to attend because of Statto duty. At half-time I met Keri, who spent a couple of months with the ladies' team earlier this season before moving on to Reading. She's doing fine and liking the higher standard of football there.
Trevor made several wisecracks at various of the All-Stars' expense over the PA throughout the game. Halfway through the second half the All-Stars put on a few players from the bench without taking anyone off, prompting Trev to announce "The All-Stars have adopted a new formation - 7-5-3. And they still can't score." Of course, this was one of those friendlies where the result was immaterial, but it fittingly ended a 5-5 draw.
London tomorrow for TNA Wrestling live!
