Jan. 20th, 2009 03:10 pmWoke up at 3 am in a coughing fit. There was an absolutely foul taste in my throat, like I'd swallowed a bar of soap, and I kept on and on coughing and spitting saliva into the bathroom sink for a full ten minutes. It's been nothing like that bad this morning, but my throat's still sore.
Started the six week Family History course at the library this morning. There was one familiar face on the course - family friend Linda. Today's two hours were mostly taken up by the two ladies running the course telling us about birth, marriage and death certificates and where to access the records, plus a little bit about parish and military records and other genealogy websites. A few people had brought in certificates and other paraphernalia about their relatives and let us all see one or two interesting items. For the last quarter-hour we were asked what we hoped to get out of the course : I said I'd like to trace my family tree back further (so far I'm at my great-grandparents). One guy was hoping to investigate the theory, put to him by a lady professor of pre-Israeli Jewish studies who took a blood sample from him because he had interesting features, that he's descended, 3000 years ago, from the Amalekites of Canaan.
Just come from a driving lesson. It was so-so, though Peter reckons I'm getting better. Did a pretty good turn in the road, though not helped by six cars all coming along the previously quiet road where we were and all having to wait for me to complete the manoeuvre. My first reverse round a corner went wide; Peter said that was because I was only using the wing mirror for observation, and had me try again, turning round to look mostly out of the back window. The trouble with that was whenever I turned to observe through the back window I inadvertently took my foot off the clutch so the car speeded up. And I still can't get the hang of parallel parking.
So long Dubya! :D
