Jan. 3rd, 2009 08:13 pmWork again this morning on an extra shift, though just a 4-hour one. Arrived to find most of the Christmas decorations had been taken down :( Was pretty busy most of the time, so it went by quite quick.
Then home for football website duty. The afternoon went almost without a hitch, and when I chatted online with the webmaster this evening he asked whether I'd change to another league, with more duties but a lot more pay. Of course I accepted straight away - if all goes well I could have my credit card bill cleared by the time I go on holiday in June. Not many of us get promotion after our second day at work - made up for Havant & Waterlooville conceding a last-minute equaliser and East Stirlingshire getting larruped 3-0 at home by local rivals Stenhousemuir...
Just watched Your Country Needs You. It wasn't quite X Factor style as a part of me had been hoping, but good to see the BBC putting some real effort into Eurovision. Andrew Lloyd Webber's trips to Eastern Europe were a bit gimmicky, but what was most striking was the advice he got from more than one person he talked to there - that if we want to be contenders in ESC we should send our major pop stars, not unknowns. Something I've been arguing for years. It was a point Andrew and the programme's makers seemed less than keen to dwell on - hit a raw nerve perhaps? Until we have a real go at trying to persuade the likes of Leona Lewis or Girls Aloud to represent Britain in Europe I fear our hopes of climbing back into the top ten will be seriously limited. Of the contenders, I liked the girl group Daisy and thought it was a shame Andrew and Colin Barlow took them so far then decided not to progress them further. From the final six, I believe Emperors of Soul could do well with the right song, and last-minute choice Jade looks promising.
