Dec. 29th, 2008 11:10 pmWent to Fareham this morning to join the world of mobile broadband. After a shufti at the literature in the Vodafone and Orange shops I popped into O2 where my eye was caught by a poster offering mobile broadband for £10 a month for the first four months, rising to £15 a month thereafter, for a 24 month contract. That was enough to sway me, and so I spent the next twenty minutes having my details, including how long I've been with my current employers but not, funnily enough, who they actually are, taken down by a friendly young lady - who had to ask me for several of them over again after her computer crashed.
Arrived home with my little modem stick to find a message on the phone from the New Theatre Royal. I should explain that months ago I bought a ticket for Les Mis - Le Panto on the night of Thursday 8 January. Then on Christmas Eve the advent of my new sideline required me to switch to working Thursday evenings in my main job. The workload means no more requests for holiday for that week are being granted, so on Saturday I left a message on the theatre's answering machine asking if I could switch my ticket to one of the other performances, on the Wednesday or Friday. Today they'd got back to me to say Friday was sold out but I could have Wednesday. I rang them back to confirm, then as the website guy had said he might need me two midweek nights, left a message on his voicemail to say I'd be unavailable that Wednesday but OK for the Monday and Tuesday.
That, though, created a new problem. I needed to work a late shift in my main job some time before 10 January to make up New Year's Day. I had put down to do 6 January, but now I had to be available for my second job that night. The only day I was free to work a late shift was...today. So I rang the office and eventually got to speak to Pat, explain to her that the 6th was now out and ask if I could do today instead. She was fine with that and so, after hurriedly putting my theatre ticket, a covering letter and an SAE in an envelope, where I'd expected to have a relaxing afternoon, I made my way down to the bus stop to go in to work.
Checking my e-mails in the coffee lounge before the shift started, I found a message from the website guy, sent while I was travelling to the office, to say he wouldn't be needing me on 5 or 6 January. Still, I'll have a day off on the 6th then.
Pat was waiting for me when I arrived in the unit, with the paperwork for me to sign confirming my new shift pattern. Went around before start time saying hello's and asking the girls if they'd had a good Christmas. After a quiet opening hour, it was a busy shift with no problems except when I lost a lady I was interviewing when the phone connection crackled and died. There were quite a few festive nibbles on the table but I'm still so stuffed from the last few days that I didn't touch them.
Home to install mobile broadband on my PC. Working fine so far.
