Oct. 14th, 2008 11:07 pmTo Southampton for Hawks' Hampshire Senior Cup tie at VT FC. The clubhouse was quite small, but with a congenial atmosphere and BBC1 on the telly - and they served cold Magners. Good bacon roll and chips from the tea hut too.
Hawks fielded a couple of fringe players, three Academy boys, and Guy Butters making a welcome return from a long lay-off through injury. VT were well up for this game and took an early lead, but one of the Academy lads, left-back Jamie Ford, notched a well-taken equaliser and then Jamie Slabber, moments after being pilloried by Malc, put us in front. Naturally Malc claimed the rocket up the arse he'd given him had inspired Slabs to score! Alas, young Nathan Ashmore in our goal came out of his area to bring down a VT player seconds before the break and from the free kick VT striker Ryan Ashford hit a brilliant screamer into the top corner to equalise on the stroke of half-time.
Came out of the clubhouse a minute or so late for the second half (had to finish my Magners) and the first thing I saw was Ashford completing his hat-trick shooting under Nathan's body. When they added a fourth, the HWFC hardcore behind the goal gave up on the game (though we still shouted encouragement when Hawks staged the odd attack) and spent the rest of the evening reminiscing about past matches and past players, indulging in idle humour and having some good-natured banter with the VT keeper Lee Webber, a respected player in local non-league. When Webber shouted "Steps!" to his team on taking a goal-kick, Mark retorted "No, S Club 7." Malc shouted "Liberty X" and I added "Hear'Say". That drew "[malmo58], you always have to lower the tone, don't you?" from Mark.
"Only because I fancy Myleene Klass," I explained.
"Kym Ryder's better," was Mark's take on that.
VT added a fifth near the end. None of us was that gutted - we don't break our hearts over the Hampshire Senior Cup - except Spud who yelled out at our team in genuine frustration and, when Mark said "It's only the Senior Cup, mate," replied "It reflects badly on us." For the rest of us it'll be forgotten come Saturday when we're back in league action.
