Sep. 7th, 2008 05:55 pmTo Trojans sports ground, along the Eastleigh to Southampton road, to see the Hawk girls take on Southampton WFC. We've finally signed Sadie, who was a very good goalkeeper for Portsmouth Ladies not so long ago and whom we've been chasing for ages, and with Erin having taken a knock last week Sadie made her debut today. The pitch was very narrow and heavy, far from ideal for our lasses' style of play, and for the first 25 minutes the game was very turgid indeed. Michelle, a sub, was standing on the touchline giving voice to her growing frustration at Hawks' inability to break through : "We should be mullering this team!" On 25 minutes Sally opened the scoring with a fine diagonal shot along the deck from the edge of the box. We hoped that would be the opening of the floodgates, but on 33 Southampton equalised from a scramble after a free kick when a clearance from Sadie hit poor Jenna D in the face and a striker pounced. It wasn't long before Sally restored our lead with another powerful drive, and just before the break Lisa Cooper hammered home our third. Alex, last week's four-goal heroine, got to start with Telé injured, but was ineffective today.
During time added on, one of Sabrina's Academy girl friends, an Irish lass, asked me how much time added on we'd played. I told her. That was that, but next thing Sabrina and her other friends were ragging this girl about her having missed her chance to "make the first move" on me! They whispered a lot to each other, occasionally looking at me. Walking across the field to the clubhouse at half-time, the group of girls ran to keep well ahead of me - they were clearly having a private joke at my expense. As I'd always looked on Sabrina as a friend, that was disappointing. I briefly even thought "What the hell am I doing at this club?"
Sam came on as a half-time sub for Alex. The second half saw Hawks add three more without reply, with Sally completing her hat-trick, but ten minutes from the end Sally collapsed, clearly in absolute agony. She'd twisted her knee and heard a click. Ouch. I'd decided to defuse the situation with Sabrina's posse by being nice - the plan was that when I went I'd say to the Irish girl a cheery "Bye. You coming next week?" - but at the final whistle they made a beeline straight for the bar and I had to head straight up the long road to the bus stop.
