Aug. 29th, 2008 06:56 pmOne woman I phoned today got right up my bugle. She said she was dropping out of the survey as she'd "been advised" not to continue. I enquired as to her reasons : it was the first and last sentence she let me finish. She claimed she'd heard there were a lot of operations "conning people through surveys" and that she had no idea who we were. I began telling her we were a government department but got no further - "I've got no way of verifying that". I began to tell her she could call the supervisors to check our credentials but fared no better. "No, I'm not phoning anyone back and I'm not going to continue. Goodbye."
My headphones hit the back of my booth at 100 mph. When I came back from writing and handing in the refusal report, I pressed the button to make my next call but heard only silence. For a moment I thought I'd knackered the headphones, but thankfully it turned out to be just their cable connection into the black box having come loose.
Driving lesson this evening. Had a few troubles, with coming off the clutch too quickly, or stepping on the gas coming round corners, or coming off the brake too early, or trying to go down to second gear while doing 20 mph. Despite all that, I did get some junctions and corners just right and was doing, in Peter's words, "lovely gear changes" by the end - only to save the worst for the very end. Going part way up on to the pavement to park in our narrow street, I brought too much of the car up there, sending Peter into one, fearing for his exhaust pipe. He didn't shout, but he doesn't have to - he has that way of showing he's extremely annoyed indeed without having to raise his voice. He sent me out of the car while he moved it across to a more acceptable position, then did tell me I was doing OK and only making the same mistakes a lot of people do, and that I'm progressing slowly but steadily.
Still fed up.
