Jul. 22nd, 2008 11:05 pmTo Westleigh Park for the friendly with Brighton & Hove Albion. Mark asked me about Jersey in the clubhouse, including my visit to the Jersey War Tunnels. He said his grandfather was born in Guernsey during the Occupation, and all he remembered (since he was just a little kid) was that the German soldiers were really nice! I mentioned the exhibit at the Tunnels, with a videotaped actor's face atop a dummy in uniform with a caption "Would YOU let a German soldier buy you an ice-cream? He's missing his own children back in Germany." We reflected on how the soldiers were, in the end, just ordinary blokes doing a job...and how yet there were the posters stating matter-of-factly "Anyone not complying with this Regulation will be shot." We wondered how there can be people today like Griffin, Le Pen and their followers who believe Hitler was right.
Mark said he wouldn't be coming to the Telford friendly on Saturday as he's bought a ticket for 20/20 Cup Finals Day at the Rose Bowl. He bought it expecting Hampshire to be there; now he says he's just going to boo everyone! That led to reminiscences of the great day in September 2005 when Hampshire won the Friends Provident trophy (I watched it on the box, Mark was actually at Lord's). On our way into the ground he said "It's a shame, because I've never seen Telford play." I urged him to blow off the cricket and come to the Hawks game since Hampshire won't be involved anyway. Mark replied "But I've paid £43 for the ticket."
One of our new lads, Jay Gasson, put Hawks in front in the 18th minute but that was as good as it got. By half-time Brighton were winning 3-1, Nicky Forster scoring twice, thanks largely to our defence going missing. Ten minutes into the second half they made it four. From then on it was game over although with a quarter of an hour left Craig Watkins made a brilliant run and closed in on goal, and the keeper smothered the ball at his feet but then dropped the ball as he was about to kick it out and Craig pounced on it to tap to the impressive Charlie Henry for a brilliant consolation.
Here's hoping that's got Hawks' wobbles out of the way and we find our form before the season starts.
