Jul. 13th, 2008 12:03 amKatherine is a life-saver. When I rang her yesterday evening she invited me to come over a little later; she had a couple of bottles of pineau from spending half-term in France, and we rang for pizza which I paid for on my credit card (getting round the problem of my shortage of available funds this month) and spent the evening watching her DVDs of And Now For Something Completely Different and Jabberwocky (still love Deborah Fallender's Princess!)
To the Roko Centre in Portsmouth this morning to see the Hawk girls in the regional final of the FA Umbro Fives. We had two new girls who we're taking a look at - they haven't signed on yet - on board, and both played very well, as did Jodie and Chantelle who both weighed in with plenty of goals and service. Erin played a blinder in goal. Things went according to form : we lost to Bournemouth, the strongest team in our group (if only New Forest had won that penalty shoot-out) then comfortably beat the two lesser sides to qualify for the semi-final, where we met FA Premier South side West Ham. The girls put up a brave showing but lost 3-1.
Between the group games and the semi, while the girls were having a practice session I got smacked in the chops by a flying football. It knocked my specs off, but they weren't busted, thank goodness (I don't know an optician who accepts Mastercard). At first I thought a men's team having a kick-about at the far end of the pitch were to blame, but ten minutes later Laura told me Jodie was the guilty party. Jodie, standing next to her, pointed out that it was a shot of Laura's that she had saved that had then ricocheted over the high net and into my face. During the semi-final, when the ball came smashing into the fence right in front of me and I instinctively leaned back, Laura, not in action at that time and standing next to me, said "Don't worry, I can't hit you from here."
To the Barley Mow in the evening to see Kat Perrio. She and her mum, remembering me from the Waterfront Festival, both waved; her mum turned to me for a very brief chat just before Kat went on. Kat delivered another stunning set, mostly comprised of 90s and 00s hits but also including a splendid rendition of Summer of '69 *mwah* and a couple of Abba numbers. Manic Monday was included again, in the second half she gave us a Shania Twain rarity called Honey, I'm Home and a little-known Avril Lavigne number, Things I Never Say. She finished the set with You're Still The One. On sale was a honey-based real ale called Humdinger, but with my situation I went for cheaper Magners - still, gives me a reason to go back there.
Lady Mélisande, according to her Facebook profile, is now in a relationship. I guess I've known for months she's a lost cause anyway.
