Have had a horrendous sore throat since yesterday evening. Had to buy a packet of Starburst to see me through the shift. (They tasted better when they were Opal Fruits.)

First thing this morning everyone at the office was talking about England's elimination from Euro 2008. When the conversation turned to possible successors to McClaren, Jan said she didn't want Harry Redknapp to get the job as she didn't want him to leave Portsmouth. I asked her if she was a Pompey fan and she said she actually supported Southampton, but all the rest of her family were Pompey. Her Saints allegiance got her catcalls from Jane and Ann; I grinned "I don't care about Pompey or Saints, I'm a Havant & Waterlooville fan." Jane and Paula laughed, and Paula clearly thought I was joking, so I confirmed for her that I am a serious Hawks supporter, season ticket holder in fact. "Good on you," said Carol in the corner, "getting behind a local team."

Jane and Paula mused "At least we'll have a stress-free summer," so I told them I'll still be going through the emotional wringer during Euro 2008 (though I wouldn't have it any other way) as I'm a Holland supporter! "Why Holland?" Paula asked, so I explained that I've supported the Oranje since I was a kid as I liked their style of football. When I observed that I watch all the games of a World Cup or Euro, whoever is playing, Jane, Paula and Jan all agreed that they too like to watch World Cup/Euro games in which they're neutral. I added that I've done shift swaps and booked holidays to ensure I'm off work for the whole tournament - "Blimey, that's dedication!" said Paula, gobsmacked.

Jan said Beckham had played well when he came on. I replied that I'd watched the first half then switched to I'm A Celeb. Jane and Paula immediately perked up - "That's what we like!" - and for the next few minutes we all discussed the goings-on in the jungle. We were all glad Marc had been evicted first, and agreed that his girlfriend Sarah was so going to kick his arse. My support for Cerys and Katie raised eyebrows, though.

At midday, some more of the ladies were musing about the England match, sounding a little disappointed but not really bothered; Tanya concluded "Worse things happen at sea." Again I observed that I'd switched to the jungle after the first half - so, it turned out, had several of them. Again, that led to a discussion of the latest news from the programme; a couple of the girls had missed it the last couple of nights so the rest of us had to fill them in. Again, my support for Cerys wasn't over popular, mostly because of her involvement with Marc. I queried "Did she really give him that much encouragement?" and Jenny said "Laying all over somebody is encouragement!"... My admiration for Katie was shared, though, especially when we told the ones who hadn't seen it about her Bush Tucker Trial in the suspended coffin with the cockroaches.
