Sep. 30th, 2007 07:17 pmSet off early for Salisbury in the hope of enjoying a proper Sunday lunch of roast beef and Yorkshire pud and a leisurely pint before the girls' FA Women's Cup game. No such luck. The 11.32 train to Salisbury was cancelled so I was left to hang around Fareham for an hour. Loped back along West Street, pausing at Smith's to buy a Non-League Paper, and went to Burger King for an Angus Meal.
There was, thankfully, no problem with the 12.32 train, and there was a taxi outside Salisbury station when I arrived.
The first half was a bit ropey; the Hawk girls seemed to have the better of the possession but just couldn't put the ball into the net. To the bar at half-time to learn Germany had beaten Brazil 2-0 in the World Cup Final. I was in the right place for real ale, Salisbury being just up the road from the Hogback brewery. Tried a Summer Lightning - not bad at all.
During the second half, the referee had already wound up many of the Hawk contingent with some controversial officiating, then he awarded Salisbury a penalty for no reason that anyone spotted. They scored. From that moment, the game got really niggly on the pitch, and several of our girls in the stands exchanged quite a bit of 'banter' with the Salisbury manager. With 10 minutes to go Jenna D curled in a beautiful equaliser. Jade, who'd been substituted, and I got a few chants going, but our girls didn't convert any more chances so it was extra-time.
Hawks again dominated, but couldn't score, and during the second period Salisbury got a goal from a breakaway. We got a couple of corners during the final minute - all ten of our outfielders went forward, but Erin remained in her goal despite me and her friends urging her to go up too - but both were cleared and Hawks were out of the Cup.
Tried another Hogback beer, a Crop Circle, in the bar after - not bad, but my favourite was a Kenyan beer called Tusker. With two bottles of that on top of the two real ales, I was fairly merry by the time Trevor and Dick, who hadn't had to ferry any players after all, gave me a lift to Fareham.
Sneezing again, but not all the time now, thank goodness. Tuning in to Annie Nightingale and Annie Mac's special Radio 1 40th Birthday show, hoping they'll tell my story and play my request (I'm Shooting Cupid by Voice of the Beehive).
