Watched the USA v Brazil Women's World Cup semi-final in the Electric Arms, Portsmouth; the pub was initially locked up but the landlady saw me looking through the window and not only opened the pub for me but agreed to put the football on. She was well pleased that I was a fan of women's football - she said some of her clientele are 'women shouldn't play football' types - and said she wanted the USA to win.

In that, she was disappointed, as Brazil produced the shock of the tournament, tearing the USA apart with a display of the wonderful play that we associate with Brazil at their best. Marta fully justified her accolade as best lady footballer in the world. Cristiane seriously tarnished her own glorious World Cup with a celebratory gesture when her running into the back of Shannon Boxx resulted in Boxx being sent off. Unworthy of a player of her talent. The barmaid was alone in mourning the USA's defeat, as the bunch of blokes who'd entered the pub during the game and begun avidly watching it all wanted the States to lose because they'd beaten England.

Off to the nearby kebab shop for tasty lamb meat and chips before I had to go see my counsellor in Havant. Home for Who Do You Think You Are? and Belle de Jour.

Back to work today. During the first three hours I interviewed only two people - and both of those had major attitude problems. The first, a woman in her sixties, even said at one point she would only carry on if I 'curbed the way I spoke to her'. I had never spoken discourteously to her - she had been speaking discourteously to me from the beginning! Kevin, next to me, had also been getting given gallons of attitude, in his case by a teenage girl. He reckons these people feel empowered, because they know how much pressure we're under to get the work done, so they can give us as much shit as they like without fear of repercussion. "At least we get paid well," Kev concluded with a grin (a joke - our salary is nothing special). Things got a bit busier for the last two hours, but those people all treated me like a human being.

Bus 50 minutes late, and it rained the whole time I was stood at the bus stop. Then because of the delay, by the time I got onto a bus home the A32 crawl had started.
