Sep. 22nd, 2007 09:52 pmI'm coming down with a cold. Thanks a fucking bunch, Rachel.
Watched North Korea exit the Women's World Cup as their attractive football fell to Germany's superb defending and clinical seizure of goalscoring opportunities, then set off for Westleigh Park.
Over the customary Magners, joined Malc, Aly and Mark at a table in the clubhouse. England were still holding the USA 0-0; I dared to dream they might actually take the game to extra time. We watched the second half on and off while gloomily discussing the Hawks' dismal recent form and laughing at Chelsea and Avram Grant. Meanwhile, once Abby Wambach opened the scoring, it was game over for the England ladies; if they had to concede three I was glad that at least one of my heroines, Kristine Lilly, scored.
As I passed Trevor on the way to my seat he asked if I was OK to make my own way to Salisbury on Sunday week. I hadn't budgeted for that, but it's going to be possible if I shelve luxuries (it's going to include a taxi ride as Salisbury's ground is miles from the station). From what I could make out, with holiday season over and nearly all the women's squad available now, Trevor was afraid there might be no car space for me.
And then, despite Charlie Oatway making his debut, Hawks lost 2-1. The only bright spots on the day were the pre-match Magners and a first class bacon roll at half time.
On the platform at the station after, I phoned Lisa to check on the transport situation. She couldn't help me as they won't know who's available for next Sunday until after next week's training session - and she couldn't rule out the possibility of there being no space for me. That is bad news, as if I have to pay train fares to Carterton as well as Salisbury that will be next month's luxury budget out of the window.
Despite the bus driver stopping after he began to set off, not once but twice, to let desperate running latecomers on, made it home moments before X Factor started. Love Barbara (she of the "musical 'Up yours'") - really want her to make the final 12, especially after Simon gave her a No.
