Got to the office just after noon, to get lunch - an excellent braised beef in red wine and cranberry sauce - and, hopefully, watch the opening game of the Women's World Cup in the coffee lounge before going on shift at 3.30. I was in luck - while there were a half-dozen or so people already there, the telly wasn't yet on and no-one minded me putting the football on. The game even drew interested glances from several people; when a couple of ladies had to go back up to their offices, their lunch break over, one of them said she'd rather stay and watch the rest of the game (she went, though). The plant-watering lady came in at half-time, when the TV was showing a silent caption about the game - as the caption only said 'Germany v Argentina' and the venue, she asked why a game in the Rugby World Cup was being played in Shanghai!! A man and a woman who arrived at half-time and sat at another table became totally engrossed in the match, talking to each other about it the whole time. With any luck I've helped win women's football a few new fans there.

The match was a turkey shoot, Germany sticking eleven past a hapless Argentina. You have to take your hat off to the amazing Birgit Prinz, and I was delighted to see Sandra Smisek, a long-time favourite player of mine, get a hat-trick.

I was hoping to get Wednesday 24 October off work to watch the Hawks' Academy team play their counterparts from our bitter rivals Weymouth. Tiny snag : that week is the kiddies' half term. Naturally all the holiday spots for that day had been bagged, and when I phoned around the ladies on the shift swap list, none of them wanted to work that week. I was resigned to missing the match until, halfway through the shift, I went to the front desk to ask for an appointment and met Kevin there. Kevin doesn't have kids, so was happy to trade his Thursday 18 October evening shift for my Wednesday 24th morning one.

The shift passed agreeably, with a little help from the last of the Apple Crumble Fudge, and thanks to two three-adult families in quick succession who kept me on the phone from 7.52 for 9.16. As, by the end of that marathon, I hadn't been away from my booth for over an hour, I was automatically entitled to a five minute break, meaning I came back at 9.21 with nothing more to do but check my internal e-mails, enter my payclaim, pack up and go.

Home for the story of Four Weddings And A Funeral on Movie Connections. That was interesting to watch, and brought back memories of my friend Carrie and me going to see it four times, back in those crazy days of London 1994. One revelation by Richard Curtis was an eye opener : one of the early versions he wrote had Hugh Grant ending up with Kristin Scott Thomas. Exactly what I think should have happened - and I'm not alone among fans of the film there.
