Gather round, all you clowns...
Jul. 2nd, 2007 05:30 pmWore my 'Things Can Only Get Bitter' T-shirt to work today.
I'd forgotten, until I arrived at the office, that today was the Big Change Over - the telephone unit's layout, and therefore the seating plan, has been completely re-arranged. There are a few people unhappy with the new arrangements - when Sue #3 saw my T-shirt at the start of the shift, she asked whether I'd worn it as a comment on the reorganisation! I explained no, it was because I was rejected by a young lady yesterday. Sue just said "Sorry to hear that - oh well, at least we're here to cheer you up," before adding that, even if accidentally, I'd captured the zeitgeist today with my T-shirt.
During one of my mini-breaks I bumped into Vanessa, Karen and Paulette all standing in the corridor. I told them of my heartbreak, and Vanessa said "There'll be someone else." I replied that after 17 years I've given up hope. They all chorused "Oh no, don't give up hope!" and Vanessa said "Someone'll come along."
"In Gosport?" I queried, but with a smile.
That prompted Karen and Paulette to say someone might start a conversation with me in the supermarket. I had to point out that falling into romance by a chance meeting has failed to happen for me for 17 years, so surely it's not likely to suddenly happen now, but they wouldn't be deterred. Either they didn't register the words "17 years", or they're super-optimists, or they're completely bloody cuckoo.
Actually, when Vanessa had gone, I think Karen saw that I had a point, as she turned to a new line of enquiry, asking if there were any clubs I went to or could join. When I explained that I'm saving my cash for my holiday at the moment, Paulette asked when I was going.
"The 18th."
"Where?"
"Finland."
"Finnish lady!" Karen exclaimed with delight. "Bring a Finnish lady home."
A lady would have to be deeply and passionately in love with me to leave behind beautiful Mariehamn for grotty Gosport!
I got a couple of difficult people on the phone, and in my current emotional state they annoyed me more than they might have another day (I swore after coming off the phone to one of them), but apart from that the shift was quiet. There were lots of nibbles on the table, but I was good and didn't touch them.
