Jul. 1st, 2007 11:18 pmMoseyed down to the Festival just before 7.30, and caught the end of Chichino's set - soul and R&B songs but in a rockier guitar-based style. Pretty good.
Sue was in the tent, and Jade arrived soon after me, but there were less people around today and the general mood was much more subdued. Spirits dampened further when Touchline Tony announced that Level 43 would not be appearing, as they'd had "problems on the journey here".
So to fill the gap we got Rich and Liz, the morning DJs from The Quay, doing an improvised question-and-answer session. Jade found it funny, but it was all I bloody needed. I bought a Magners - one of the two drinks I could afford tonight - and sipped it slowly, lurking in the corner. Rich and Liz finished at 8.20, with twenty minutes still to fill, so we got canned music while Soul Survivors did a sound check.
Then Miss K2 arrived, with a girlfriend and the girlfriend's boyfriend in tow.
She made a beeline straight for Mark and Lin, in a hurry and seemingly trying to conceal herself from my gaze. She held a whispered conversation with them, taking care to always put herself where there was a body between her and my line of sight, then scurried out of the VIP tent to join her friends.
After a few minutes sipping my Magners in numb silence, I told Jade (she knew I fancied Miss K2). Jade said people like that annoyed her and that "she should be flattered".
Jade was more interested in Rich and Liz, who she'd seen standing in the open front of the VIP area. She plodded off to take a photo of them with her phone.
Just as Jade came back from taking her pic - Rich had not been amused, she said - Every Breath You Take came on. I sang along, from the heart. During the song Miss K2 and her friends walked back in. After they passed by me and arrived at the bar, Miss K2 pointed at me, said to the other two "Look at Wilhelmus" and burst out laughing. All I was doing was singing along with the music FFS. Then, for my benefit, she wrapped herself round her girlfriend's boyfriend, in an attempt to look like she was with him, and the three of them had hysterics.
Jade returned from an attempt to get another pic of Rich and Liz just as Soul Survivors came on, and I filled her in. Jade contemptuously snorted at Miss K2 and Co's immaturity - "How old is she? Five?" - but she was preoccupied with Rich and Liz, whom she reckoned were far up their own arses.
Soul Survivors were pretty good, though I remained numbed through their set. Halfway through, Miss K2 ran in like she had a rocket up her bum, and left her jacket with Mark and Lin, again whispering to them and doing her 'concealing herself' act the whole time. After Soul Survivors finished I bought my second Magners and went out to the front part to await Jaki Graham. During the extended wait I found a spot right up by the fence dividing us VIPs from the riff-raff (j/k) and found myself standing next to Aussie and Carol.
As Jaki Graham opened Carol spotted I was looking out of sorts, so I told her that a young lady I like (I didn't identify her) had been avoiding me and looking at me and laughing. Carol was quite compassionate about it, saying "oh, what a shame", then she said "Stand with me" and linked my arm, dancing with me for the opening bars.
Jaki looked absolutely gorgeous, she was an extremely sexy mover, and she opened with my favourite of her hits - Step Right Up. During her second song, Breaking Away, someone tapped me on the shoulder. It was Claire, Hayley's sister. She said she was really sorry about the cash I'd lost on Hayley's wedding, and that that was typical Hayley and that was why she (Claire) had never booked her travel and wouldn't do so until the last minute. She said Hayley and Joey were now having a closest-family-only wedding this month, then a blessing in Las Vegas next year to which everyone would be invited. She tried to get me to come over for that, but I told her it's just not possible - I only work part-time and already have a raft of expenses for the coming months.
Then she went back to her friends and I turned back to the stage to enjoy a fantastic set from Jaki, comprised of a mixture of her hits and some old soul and Motown classics. When she finished her encore, I used my Access All Areas pass to slip backstage, but just spent the minutes of Touchline Tony's closing speech and the five minutes after wading through mud, looking in vain for Jaki - they'd somehow spirited her away.
So trudged home.
And I have work now for five successive days. Terrific.
