A very busy shift at work today, plenty of interviews, but it makes the time go quicker. Being Monday there were nibbles, a giant bag of ready salted quality crisps and ... OMG ... TERRY'S CHOCOLATE ORANGE BARS! There were about a dozen bars; no-one minded me taking a whole one nearly one-and-a-half hours into the shift, but later I noticed a lot of the girls were simply breaking one segment off a bar. Whoops.

My last household, a mix of Brazilians, a Polish lady and her English partner, was so complicated I got finished just a minute or two too late to dash for the bus. I took advantage of the situation by not only entering my payclaim but also checking my internal e-mail, which I hadn't yet done, and also, when Kevin came to give me back some holiday forms, chasing him up over some shift swap forms I hadn't had back yet. Doing all that kept me in the unit till 2.45, allowing me to claim an extra quarter of an hour's pay.

Christine #3 apologised for not relieving me on my last phone call. Since there were four whole Chocolate Orange Bars still on the table, I felt justified in taking one to eat in the coffee lounge while I waited for the 3.40 bus. I know it's going to do nothing for my efforts to lose the extra pounds I've put on over my last weeks as mayor's consort, but frankly, at that moment I felt that could wait till tomorrow.

Switching on my mobile in the lounge, I had a voicemail from the NHS dentist in Lee to say they were ready to register me. I had to turn down the TV, move away from the buzzing vending machines and replay the message a couple of times before I could make out the phone number and reference number. Finally I got through to a pleasant young lady who, having only just moved to the area, said she found the name of my street charming and picturesque - that weirded me out a little, but then to me my address is the most run-of-the-mill thing. She booked me in with a lady dentist, whom, she assured me, was "lovely", before adding "well, they're all nice, of course," for a check-up on 3 September.

So next thing was to phone my current private dentist, cancel my appointed check-up and let them know I'm moving on. The receptionist recognised my voice, and when I said I was transferring, she said "You've found an NHS practice, have you?"

"Yes, there's one just opened in Lee."

"How dare they," she said, but she sounded like she was smiling. "They'll be taking all our patients. We'll be sorry to lose you," she went on.

"It was nice knowing you," I said, as we said goodbye.

"You too. Take care."

Got the bus into Gosport town, to collect my Michelle Dewberry book from Methvens with the tokens that were my parting gift from the Town Hall staff. Home from there, and just about time to have dinner before setting off for college.

Poor old Joan had a terrible pain in her forehead, having had an altercation with a door frame. She gave me two more desktop publishing exercises; did them without much trouble. I'd not long started on the second one when, at 8.10, Joan announced she was going home because the pain was too much for her to bear now. She asked us to tidy up the disks and worksheets when we were done. I finished my exercise at 8.30; Joan wasn't around to give me another, and by now Richard had already left, so I said my goodbyes to the others and moseyed on home.
