On Sunday my mother, in her infinite wisdom, gave me not just an egg but also a box of Quality Street Caramels, Fudges and Toffees. Scoffed them at work today, before the shift and during my breaks. Delicious - but one of them yanked out one of my fillings. So I'm not quite finished with the private dentist after all...

Finished my last interview bang on 2.30; cue mad rush to get my stuff cleared away and dash down to the bus stop. Made it on time, though in the end the bus was late anyway. Then at Fareham bus station the buses were complete chaos - there wasn't an 82 to be found. After half an hour hanging around, an inspector said all the Gosport buses were late and he was still trying to find a bus to form the next 82. So I just hopped on an 86 that was about to leave, and promptly got stuck in the A32 crawl. Home around 4.30.

After dinner, popped into Waitrose to get a bottle of wine for tonight. They've got some French ones on a promotion; champagne for £18.99 was a bit out of my league, so went for a nice-looking Beaujolais at £3.99.

Went to see Katherine and Mike this evening. On the walk there, passing the Park Hotel I noticed a standing blackboard saying they were having Kat Perrio - "Songbird of the South" - from last year's South Coast Idol on the 28th. Alas, within a minute I'd remembered I have to go to my mother's poxy Charity Old Tyme Music Hall that night.

Katherine and I caught up with each other's news, glancing from time to time at Man Utd v Roma on the telly. There was a little bowl of Mini Eggs on the table; Katherine urged me to help myself to as many as I liked as they're both trying to lose weight. Fortunately, they haven't been following Life On Mars, so I was spared seeing tonight's final episode before I see last week's on BBC3 tomorrow (I'm a week behind). After the footie ended Mike put The Hits on - it was a countdown of 'So awful we love them', and they'd reached #7 - Think Twice by Celine Dion. "I love this song!" I protested, so Katherine said "Maybe they've done it on cheesy videos. You have to admit this video is very cheesy." We became convinced that was the criterion they'd gone for when the next songs were Wham's Last Christmas and Lionel Richie's Hello ("As a teacher he shouldn't be getting involved with a student"). I was a little radged that #4 was 99 Red Balloons by Nena, the first single I ever bought, but at least Katherine insisted on the volume being turned up for me.

We'd speculated on what might be top of the chart; I guessed Stevie Wonder's I Just Called To Say I Love You might be quite high - sure enough, it was #3. We all agreed with Mike's prediction that Elton John's Nikita would be in the top five, but it wasn't. Starship's Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now was #2, prompting Katherine and me to recall teenage crushes on Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall respectively. We all agreed Chesney Hawkes was a worthy #1!

Katherine brought out the Bailey's to round off the evening.
