Mar. 8th, 2007 01:01 amDuring the first hour of the shift, I got a nice long break from the phones. Everyone was talking about an e-mail we'd all been sent, and two of the girls both asked if I'd seen it yet, so decided I'd better check my internal mail - there was masses of stuff in my inbox. I'd been reading them for 13 minutes and was still only about halfway through when...the evacuation alarm sounded. While we were all out in the car park I met Sarah #2 - first time I'd seen her in months. She apologised for not offering me lifts lately, but explained she was having to work longer hours to make up time taken off months ago due to domestic troubles.
The all clear was announced; back upstairs and back to my inbox. The mail everyone was talking about turned out to be a reminder of last year's directive that we're to take a five minute rest break every hour, and not roll them up into one big break like so many still do.
At 2 pm I got a three adult family, so knew I was going to overrun. While I was doing that last interview Kevin came over and handed me back some actioned holiday forms. They included the two weeks in July I booked - the first week originally for Hayley's wedding, the whole now hopefully my trip to Åland - but, despite my having explained the situation to Kevin and Paul a fortnight ago, they'd also actioned the form I submitted after the wedding was postponed, cancelling my request for leave on the first two days. So when I finally came off the phone at 2.45 I had to fill out a new form, requesting those two days as holiday all over again.
Went to the Cellars in Portsmouth this evening to see Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby. They were brilliant! I'd never heard any of Wreckless's music before, but it was good stuff - he has a fine line in offbeat lyrics and wry observational humour. Wreckless also treated us to several deadpan anecdotes between songs. Amy was magnificent as always; a couple of numbers after she came on she asked "Has anyone here heard of me?" I and one other guy put our hands up. "My two fans in Portsmouth," she smiled. The two of them combined really well both on her songs and his. They did a barnstorming version of Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again? Both of them did a couple of solo numbers - Amy's Keep It To Yourself was an understated gem. They closed the set with a rocked-up rendition of Leaving On A Jet Plane! There was Forty-Niner at the bar, but I rationed myself to one pint, before the show - a wise move, as it turned out, as after the show there were several CDs on sale for a tenner and I was able to pick up the rerelease of Diary Of A Mod Housewife, the only CD of Amy's I didn't have.
Just after I bought the CD Amy appeared through the door. The other guy was also standing there, so she smiled and said "My two fans." The other bloke briefly spoke to her, then I said hello and told her I was a huge fan and how great it was to see her live at last. She autographed a flyer for me and wrote a lovely message on it <3 I congratulated her on the show (adding "both of you" as Eric hadn't emerged yet) and wished her best wishes.
Then it was outside to phone for a taxi.
