Mar. 5th, 2007 09:58 pmAt college tonight I managed to seriously put Joan's nose out of joint.
On a query in a database exercise, I had to specify 'between 6 and 8' as a search criterion. I knew how to do 'less than', 'more than', 'less than or equal' and 'more than or equal', but not a range, and none of the things I tried worked, so I asked Joan for help.
She came over to my workstation, but she wasn't sure how to do it either, so she entered Help. After a couple of searches in the help topics, the solution was on the screen - type the wording 'Between [x] And [y]'. It was jumping out at me, but Joan couldn't see it at all and kept trying various things with the <, > and = signs. I tried pointing it out; she noticed me saying the 'And' bit so tried combining the comparator signs with 'And'. She got an error message saying 'And' has to be used with 'Between' - and she still didn't get it!
I said "Let me have a go", turned the keyboard towards me and typed 'Between 6 And 8' in the box. Joan got up and turned back for her desk, I said "Thank you" and she sniffily replied "I wasn't going to do it that way. You've taken over. I didn't think that was going to work." And she sat back down, decidedly miffed.
It worked. I told her so; she said "You didn't use the comparator signs, then?" I said no and she remained silent.
As we were all walking down to the hall and to the exit, I said to Karen and Diana "I've seriously put Joan's nose out of joint" and told them the story, ending "So she's decidedly miffed with me". Karen laughed and said "She gets miffed with Di every week." Diana said "She can't expect you to just sit there and say nothing and wait for her to see the answer." I pointed out that Joan wouldn't have seen the answer if we'd sat there till Christmas. Di chuckled and suggested I apply to be a tutor...
