Mar. 4th, 2007 10:32 pmThe girls' game was called off thanks to yet another waterlogged pitch, so spent the afternoon watching the European Indoor Athletics and slipping in and out of sleep (from staying up till 3 am watching Celeb FA3).
To Eastleigh this evening for their Mayor's Charity Spring Concert. It was chamber music; my mother had been dreading it, fearing that it would be terribly highbrow and heavy going, but in the end it was quite pleasant. Got a full-on kiss and cuddle from Maria on arrival. At the interval John from Rushmoor came over and said "Can I tell you something?" He instructed me that you don't clap between the movements of a piece, only at the end of a whole piece. It's true that during the first half I'd been leading the applause whenever the music stopped, but each time I'd genuinely thought that was the end of the second piece - it had come as a surprise when the musicians had carried on playing after the applause died down. John went on to say how he and Margaret often attended concerts at the Albert Hall and such like, and how conductors can really get narked when people applaud in between movements. While I was getting educated I had to contend at the same time with my mother wanting to check with me whether we'd put a future concert in our diary... Then we met Yvette, the lead violinist, who'd just announced her engagement to the conductor. During the second half, a few people still applauded between the movements at first, but without me joining in each ripple rapidly died out until, when the fourth movement of Magnificat ended, the only person to start clapping was me ma :) Another kiss and bear hug with Maria as we all said goodbye, prompting Jim to tell me "put her down, you don't know where she's been"...
