As I was on a shift swap with Lesley, I'd been looking forward to sitting near Tania this morning, but half an hour into the shift she was still nowhere to be seen. I was due to give her my bonus ball money for the month today, so asked Heather #2 her whereabouts and was told she was working in the Management Unit today. So walked round to the MU to settle up with her. She was clearly busy, so I couldn't ask her to write my Valentine card to Lady Mélisande as I'd intended (the girl knows my handwriting).

So a bit later in the shift I went up to Karen and Paulette and asked if either of them would do me a favour. Paulette asked what, so I explained her mission. She agreed, so I left her with the card and a sheet of paper on which I'd written Lady Mélisande's address and my message; less than half an hour later Paulette walked over to me and slid the completed card onto the front corner of my desk. I was talking on the phone, so we exchanged silent thumbs-ups.

With my bad throat, coughing and starting to get the sniffles, the phones were hard going again today, plus I got a lecture from one old lady who decided she didn't like doing the survey every three months and claimed she'd thought the first one was a one-off, and a refusal from another hard-of-hearing old lady who didn't seem to grasp that all we wanted of her was to answer a few simple questions - trying to get through to her was like banging my head on a brick wall until it bled. But the shift was made tolerable by a sumptuous nibbles table, with a big bunch of red grapes, sultana finger cakes, and a bag of very tasty sweets, both mints and chocolates, that seemed to come from a cruise ship (the mints were marked 'Celebrity Cruises').

In the evening my mother and I were guests at the local Sea Cadets' annual award ceremony. No duties required, we just had to sit and applaud while cadets were presented with prizes, though during the second half of the evening I had to patiently stand at my mother's side while she talked to lots of people. At least at the end of the evening we were invited into the wardroom, where we got a free choice of a free drink so I went for a port. Later a friendly lady we were talking to offered me a refill :)
