Jan. 3rd, 2007 04:32 pmThere was a box of Irish cream liqueur chocolates on the front table this morning. Naturally assuming they had been put there for nibbles, after my first interview I opened the box and took one. Moments later, Janine and Heather #1 arrived at the desk - with consternation, they said "You haven't opened those, have you?" I confessed.
"They're not for nibbles, someone just left them there."
Fortunately, it wasn't long before Carolyn arrived, and said she'd left the chocolates there "for anyone who wants one." Meanwhile, Janine had turned her attention to the two Chelsea FC diaries that someone had left lying on top of the chocolates for anyone who wanted them. "Chelsea!" she said a couple of times, with obvious disdain. The diaries didn't lie unwanted, though: Carolyn and Rosemary both said their husbands were Chelsea fans, and snapped the diaries up as gifts for them.
"You're not a Chelsea fan, then?" I said to Janine with a grin.
"Definitely not!" She turned out to be yet another Pompey supporter.
Later I came off a call to hear Sarah #4 saying she'd taken down her Christmas decorations last night. "Snap," I said, and that led to us confessing to each other that both our families have still got loads of Christmas nibbles left, including a lot of Quality Street. I said it'd probably take us weeks to finish the food, but Sarah said she and her husband take big dips into their QS every evening.
Got my wage slip for December this morning, which confirmed that with my extra shift each week I can now expect to take home £440 a month. If all goes according to plan - touch wood - then come the 31st of this month I will be out of Mistress Overdraft's clutches for good. Boosted by that news, at lunch time I went down to the canteen only intending to have a cup of coffee, but the roast chicken with stuffing and the potatoes with some added red vegetable or other smelled so tempting that I went for them, for the first time in months able to buy a £3.80 dinner with a clear conscience.
As we were packing up at the end of the shift, Carolyn asked whether I'd be watching Celeb BB5 from tonight. I said I'd be sticking with Just The Two Of Us; Sue, groaning at the word that Jade Goody was to be on Celeb BB5, reckoned I'd made a "wise choice", but both Carolyn and Carole were avidly looking forward to Celeb BB5. Carolyn even had a go at persuading me to watch the first hour of Celeb BB5 before Just The Two Of Us starts at 9pm. We were all on our way out by then, and it didn't seem the right time to break it to the girls that I've become a disillusioned romantic when it comes to BB...
