Hawks Ladies were away at Andover New Street today. I arrived at West Leigh Park to be greeted by Lisa saying I'd won the supporters' club Hospitality Draw, winning a free hospitality package including a dinner at a match later in the season. Lisa added that she herself had pulled my name out of the hat.

As I'd not managed to do any studying for my CLAIT course all week, I'd brought my text book along to read through while waiting in the clubhouse. I did get some done, despite distraction from the Girl Groups Hit Parade on the telly - I couldn't resist stopping altogether to watch the vids of All Saints' Never Ever and Atomic Kitten's Whole Again. Lisa observed me reading the text book, and said she'd started the same course once but dropped out as she didn't have time to keep it up.

We got to watch the opening minutes of Ipswich v Norwich before Lisa announced that we were off. She and Rob had a headache dividing us into carloads, not helped by Ollie being unable to drive as he'd been out on the lash last night. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to get left stranded in Havant, but Sarah C agreed to take me along with Chantelle.

There wasn't much conversation on the drive as Sarah put loud dance music on, but she and Chantelle did tell each other they'd both been out late last night - Sarah had just been out on the razzle locally but didn't get to bed till 1.30 (mentioning Lisa being pissed off with Ollie, Sarah said she thought she was probably over the limit too), while Chantelle was with a friend at a School Disco party in Brighton and got the midnight National Express coach home. Sarah was running low on petrol (I offered to help her out with the cost but she wouldn't hear of it) so we stopped at a garage about halfway there. Some of the others did the same; Chantelle saw Sam walking towards the shop, so asked her to get her a Snickers. When Sam came back with it, she wouldn't take the 50p Chantelle pressed into her hand; Chantelle wouldn't take it back, so Sam gave it to me to look after!

The clubhouse at Andover New Street was really nice, and had reasonably priced real ale on offer :) Did some more studying while the girls were getting changed.

Watched the first half standing with Brian, who soon began giving a tactical analysis of what each player should have done with each ball. He explained that, as an ex-player (he didn't mention that he was Sunday league) it was hard for him to just stand and watch players make mistakes. Andover NS were our toughest opponents yet, though it has to be said we weren't on top form, but Louise was playing a blinder - nothing got past her - and we did take the lead through a Lisa Cooper lob just before the break.

In front of me in the queue at the serving hatch at half-time was one of the Andover subs; she asked the man for a cereal bar, but he didn't have any. He grinned "I've only got healthy food - chips, Mars bars, Kit Kats and snickers." She settled for a cup of tea. While I was waiting for my chips Lynn and Kerri came up to the hatch and we said hello. I was finally served my chips just as the second half was kicking off, and walked back round the pitch to stand with Lynn and Kerri.

During the course of conversation, Lynn thanked me for supporting the girls home and away; she pointed out that I'm the only Hawks Ladies spectator without a daughter in the team! Lynn said Jenna and others had been at the men's club's Race Night yesterday evening; while Jenna had been home by 10.30, Lynn reckoned from the way the team were playing that some of the others had been out drinking much later! She knew about Ollie being out drinking; when I told her Sarah and Chantelle had both been out on the razzle till past 1, she wasn't surprised. Still, Michelle curled one in from a free kick with less than 20 minutes to go, and, thanks again largely to Louise in goal, the girls held on for the win.

Back in the clubhouse the girls all got sausages and chips; Jade went up a second time and fetched some for me - very tasty. The telly was showing Blackburn v Tottenham on Al-Jazeera! Louise was deservedly voted Man of the Match, while Bunhead got Dick of the Day for saying "If you're gay, you can't get buried". Apparently she really believes that that's the law.

It doesn't get much better than watching football on Al-Jazeera in a great clubhouse, feasting on good sossies and chips, with your women's team whom you've just seen win. (Well, it could have got better, if someone had bought me a real ale, but mustn't get greedy.)

The girls discussed carloads for the return trip and decided that Trevor, who was going first, would take Lucy and me. As we left, one of the girls shouted "We love you" at me - I couldn't make out who. Trevor put some pretty good music on, including the Beautiful South. He asked whether I'd caught them at the Guildhall in May; I explained I'd been in France at the time, but that I did see them at Wembley in 1997.

Trev dropped me in Fareham a short walk from the bus station. The Fareham Christmas lights had been switched on about an hour before; the mini-funfair was still there, as was a stall dispensing hog roasts (shame I was skint), but the radio roadshow was packing up. Looked round for John and Pam, as switching the lights on was their duty, but they must already have gone.

Bus home. Must get on with my CLAIT homework.
