Jun. 2nd, 2006 10:44 pmWent into Fareham after work to buy my mother's birthday present (Shayne Ward's album) and Dad's Father's Day gift (the 'Ray' DVD) as they'll be in Cyprus for the actual days so I have to give them before they go on Sunday. Going to the checkout at Music Zone to buy Ray, I saw they had The Complete History of the World Cup on special offer at £6.97. A little voice in my head said 'go on, seven quid isn't going to slow down climbing out of the red,' so I went for it.
I went on to the Watch Repair Centre, where the man told me the news I'd been fearing. The strap was always going to fall out of the bottom end, because themetal (it turned out to be plastic) next to the hole where the pin went in had worn away. So the watch was finished unless you Superglued the strap in, which he didn't like to do as it meant the strap couldn't be replaced if it wore away. I told him I'd only bought the watch less than a week ago, in France, so was obviously reluctant to throw it away. He said that was a lesson - don't buy cheap watches in markets abroad.
I was damn well not going to accept that I'd wasted 10 euro and throw the watch in the bin. I still prefer it to my old one with the cracked glass, so I asked him how much he'd charge for Supergluing it. He said he didn't like to actually charge, just put a donation in the Childline tin. He gave the watch a couple of blasts from a spray can, and said to leave it to set for a couple of hours before wearing again. (I'm taking no chances, I'm waiting till tomorrow.) I put £4 in the tin.
On to WH Smith to spend the book token I got from the Town Hall staff on Mayor Making Day. They didn't have the book on Scotland '78 :( but they did have Pointless, Jeff Connor's account of spending a season with East Stirlingshire, my Scottish team. I picked that up, then my eye was caught by Confessions of a Bad Girl, the autobiography of one of my heroines, Claire King, reduced to £14.99. Was tossing up in my head between the two when I took out my book token and noticed - for the first ever time - that there was not one but two £10 book tokens in the little envelope. Therefore I had to spend more than £20 - you can't get change from book tokens - so bought both books with a clear conscience.
