Morning shift today on a swap with Rachel. Went OK, apart from having to use all my persuasive powers to stop an elderly Italian gentleman withdrawing from the survey after only two waves, and copping an earful of complaint from a woman who'd, thankfully, just completed her last one.
I was able to cover Rachel this morning because I'd booked this evening as holiday to see Hawks play Basingstoke. All through the walk from the station to the ground, it was spitting rain. Then after half an hour, there was already a massive queue at the tea hut, so I had to make my way down there then to make sure of getting served before half-time was over. So I watched the last 10 minutes of the first half standing in a queue in spitting rain, while an elderly Basingstoke supporter engaged me in conversation about how our centre-backs were, in his view, big powerful lads who were great in the air but not so hot on the ground. Meanwhile Hawks had plenty of pressure but the Basingstoke keeper played a blinder. The one bright spot on the first half was seeing Chantelle, Penny, Amy and Lisa Cooper who all came along to watch after their training session ended.
After Richard Pacquette scored a beautiful goal on 57 minutes, Hawks appeared to be coasting to victory. With a quarter of an hour to go, Rocky Baptiste had the ball, running towards the edge of the box. Tony Taggart was unmarked on his left, but Baptiste held on to the ball, hesitated when the defence began to close in on him, and volleyed high over the bar.
From a breakaway, Basingstoke equalised with the last bastard kick of the game. (Actually it was a header, but you know what I mean). Waiting at the gate by the players' tunnel to file out of the ground, I felt physically sick.
Into the clubhouse for a coke - the only drink my meagre budget permitted - until it was time to go catch my train.
Arsebiscuits.

Date: 2007-10-23 12:50 pm (UTC)How is Kevin Scriven doing for you? Has he learnt to kick yet? I've always thought that he could be a top keeper if he just sorted his kicking out.
Might be going to Hayes & Yeading v Fisher tonight, if it isn't ridiculously cold by then...
