The Minett sisters didn't show up.
I sat talking to the other guests with my mother until 6.40, when I excused myself and popped into a vacant room to phone Louise's mobile. A bloke answered. I asked if I could speak to Louise; he told her it was for her, she asked "Who is it?" and I gave my name. Silence.
I thought he was just waiting for her to take the phone up, then looked at my mobile's screen. "Would you like to call again?" Either we'd been cut off or...they'd hung up.
I tried again. Voicemail. I left a message, asking if she was OK and if she'd been held up, but I knew in my heart that they weren't coming. And never had been going to come.

Date: 2007-05-09 05:05 pm (UTC)We'd met at the local paper's Sports Awards in February and she'd promised to come to the Mayor's Parlour to let me have my pic taken with her and her gold medal. After that, texts to her went unanswered (which first gave me the feeling she never was coming) till in the end we offered her 8 May and she accepted - you now know the rest of the story.
