Got a lift to Fleetlands’ away game at AFC Aldermaston on Wednesday with Stu the kitman. I gave him a hand carrying the shirts and training tops into the dressing room and hung some of the shirts on the pegs.
Iain, Kev and a couple more of the committee arrived and we sat in the bar - them drinking teas and coffees, me quaffing a Rekorderlig - until the start of the match was imminent.
Fleetlands won 5-1. At half time I went to the tea hut and returned with a carton of chips, prompting one of the committee men to shout “Wilhelmus, you fat knacker”. I’m hoping these are people who’ll only insult a friend and that it’s a sign I’ve been welcomed into the group.
Jamie Wrapson, an early sub for a player who did his hammy, had a great game and netted our third. Substitute Jake Alford was the butt of a lot of jokes from the committee men. Even scoring a brilliant goal for our fourth didn’t give him a reprieve; the club Tweeter called it ‘a lucky fourth goal’ and didn’t mention him by name! There’s one player I’ll be cheering to the rafters at future games.
Post-match drink, with Iain checking his bets on the night’s matches. Clear run on the drive back with Stu. Home at 11.30.
