To the Axe and Compass tonight for the fireworks. Arrived out back of the pub just before 6.30 to find the barbecue already in place - just burgers, hot dogs and bottles of Heineken - but asked Jake about the fireworks and he said they'd start at "seven or half past", so had a quick burger and made for the warmth of the bar for a bit of Arsenal v Liverpool over a Bulmers No. 17.

Just before seven, made my way back out to the yard ... and milled around for the next half hour as we all waited, while wind and the odd outbreak of rain lashed us. Nipped over to the tent for a bottle of Heineken at 7.25. On the half hour, finally, a red comet flashed up and exploded in a starburst to applause from all round. For the next half hour a multi-coloured succession of mostly star shells, with the occasional cascade and odd swirling comet, lit up the night sky. There were a few very satisfying stratospheric high soarers. For a little while towards the end the wind was blowing the fireworks across to one side, and one green star shell was sent so low-flying in the wind that it did its starburst just a few feet off the ground over the neighbouring field. A tight-packed array of little white flashes brought the display to a close.

Jolly good show.
