To the Smoke for London Seaward v Cambridge City Women. In the clubhouse, Tracy at the serving hatch said there were only ready-prepared cheeseburgers or hot dogs available - she wouldn’t be cooking anything to order, as being Easter Sunday they weren’t expecting a big turnout. Fortunately the hot dogs turned out to be very tasty frankfurter-type ones.

Groundhopper Dave was in a talkative mood this afternoon, sharing stories all through the game, like his having seen a goal scored after 9 seconds of a match yesterday. Another hopper called Chris, who’d seen us away earlier in the season, joined us today; he remembered me as ‘the man from Portsmouth’. At half-time he told us tales of his recent footballing travels and asked me about matches I’d seen lately. After six and a half weeks of Lent abstention from chocolate, I sustained myself through the game with a bag of Daim mini eggs.

Cambridge City are the league’s basement side, and most of the game went according to the form book. Our wing-back Mira Hoteit bagged two well-taken goals in the second half of the first half, prompting Dave to quip that she should be playing up front. After the break Sam Lanza made it three from a goalmouth scramble, then on 75 minutes Liz fired our fourth from a corner.

Seaward appeared to be coasting, but moments later a Cambridge goal kick rolled along the ground the length of the pitch and ended up in the back of our net. No-one, including two Cambridge fans sat near us, was sure whether the goal would have to be credited to the Cambridge ‘keeper or whether it had come off one of our players for an own goal. Buoyed, Cambridge never stopped trying and got a second in time added on but Seaward held on for the win.

Oddly, there were no Portsmouth trains at all at Waterloo. Had to change at Eastleigh and make my way home from Fareham.
