Back to London at last, to see London Seaward for the first time since mid-November. I wished everyone “Happy New Year”; Groundhopper Dave laughed “Belated” and Tracey the tea lady said Christmas and New Year felt a lifetime ago now. Soon after Tracey opened the serving hatch I asked for a burger with onions, no cheese; she brought one over to my table as soon as they were ready. First class too.

The other Tracey and Christine were both sporting new London Seaward beanie hats; they took great pleasure in selling me one for £15. Later they introduced me to Mark, a new volunteer. I introduced myself as “a fan”, the ladies told him I was a dedicated regular and I added “And…I live in Portsmouth”. Tracey mused how she only lives down the road.

Got a quick chat with Liz, Jo and Shamoy who were on the steps outside the bar. On my asking if they’d had a good Christmas, Jo said she’d played football on Christmas Day!

Gary and Keith arrived and we all sat in the same block of the stand. Worthing scored with a close range shot midway through the first half. Jo had a great game at centre back and Tia made some good saves and clearances but though Seaward kept pressing forward, we didn’t manage a shot on target until the 94th minute and that one was caught by the goalie.

Towards the end Dave asked if I’d booked my hotel for Thursday’s cup tie and said to watch out for it being frozen off. “We’re due minus six here in the week”.

Said goodbyes to Dan and some of the girls at the final whistle - Jo high fived me - and wended the weary way home.
