Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble
Mar. 9th, 2023 06:37 pmTo London yesterday to see EVE Riot Grrrls of Wrestling’s International Women’s Day show, Women Behaving Badly. There were four rows of seats on each side of the ring - I was in the second row - and a lot more spectators standing.
Julie, the ring announcer, was a lively character, and there were a couple of groups of avid fans who clearly follow these wrestlers regularly. They had chants for a lot of the participants, obviously inspired by songs from the football terraces, songs both of praise and of disparagement! Heels like The Uprising tag team drew a lot of boos (and even a round of “Where’s your titles gone?” to the Chirpy Chirpy tune), heel Nightshade was derided as ‘Lampshade’ (I wished the Laura Di Matteo fans would chant ‘Lampshade, Lampshade, vafanculo’), while tag team champions Rayne Leverkusen and Laura Di Matteo were well loved.
The wrestlers put on a magnificent show. The promoters made a brave move by having the heels win four of the six matches (in two cases, by cheating), making it predictable that the faces won the two main events. While Lizzy Evo was clearly meant to be a heel, she had a lot of fans in the place rooting for her!
My favourites were The Queens of Kanpai, Sumire Natsu and Session Moth Martina. They dressed in eye-catching accessories and fur print jackets, had great banter and swilled beer from cans. Their heel opponents the Royal Aces moaned at the crowd “You’re cheering for them? If Wish did Kat Slater?” The Royal Aces got the win (dubiously) but the crowd got the chance to give the Queens another ovation.
Near the end the next event was announced as the EVE 13th Anniversary Show in Tufnell Park on 5 May. Although hotel rooms in London aren’t cheap, as it’s my birthday weekend it’s very tempting.
