Rollin’ Danny
Jan. 29th, 2023 12:09 amGosport Borough v Hayes & Yeading United at Privett Park this afternoon. My 300th Gosport Borough game. I mentioned the milestone to the programme lady and Deb standing next to her. They thanked me for my support of the club and said “Congratulations”.
In the clubhouse bar Jeremy, the PA man, came over and said “Deb tells me it’s your 300th game today.”
“That’s right. Including away games and the FA Trophy Final.”
Jeremy asked if he could mention it on the tannoy and I agreed.
With kick off drawing nearer I drank up and headed for Jock’s Snack Bar. Bought an excellent carton of chips and a Creme Egg which I popped in my pocket for after the chips.
Borough were on the back foot for most of the first half and went in at the break 2-0 down. After running through the half-times from the FA Cup and revealing the winning 50-50 Draw ticket, Jeremy announced that he wanted to give a shout out to a Gosport supporter, said it was my 300th game and thanked me for my support for the club over the years.
It was a great gesture and I loved it. I did get to reflecting that since I began coming to the club in 1979, my total does only come on average to less than seven games a season; I looked back with momentary regret on the various distractions (mostly spells of following assorted other teams) over all the years, that kept me from supporting the Borough as I should have done. Well, no more, I vowed as the second half kicked off. Like Take That, I’m back for good.
Just three periods away, I have no regrets about. Student days in London, of course. Then there’s my time following Tranmere Ladies and my time with the Lady Pies, both of which gave me warm rewarding friendships and precious memories and there’s no way I’d give up either of them.
Dan Wooden had a shot saved at the start of the second half but Hayes continued to press. After the hour Borough had more of the ball but were kept at bay by solid rearguard action until, on 75 minutes, the Hayes goalie brought down Abdulai Baggie in the area, and Bradley Tarbuck converted the spot kick.
The goal looked like it was going to just be a consolation by the time the fourth official held up the board heralding 5 minutes of injury time.
Then Tarbuck sent in a high cross and Dan Wooden leapt above the others to head home and send the Borough support into ecstasy. Just as we were settling into the feeling of relief at salvaging a draw, Dan the Man struck again, blasting home a flick-on from sub Billie Busari to clinch all three points. Cue wild celebrations in every section of the main stand.
After the final whistle the Gosport players stayed on the pitch to walk around applauding the crowd. Sweet Caroline played over the PA. I was glad I wasn’t the only one chanting “SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD!”
This evening, about to set off for the social club, found the Creme Egg in my coat pocket.
