I Got The Six
Nov. 6th, 2021 09:48 pmBack to Walthamstow today for Clapton Community v AEK London, six weeks since my last visit for a home game but it seemed like ages. The train from Portsmouth was packed with Havant & Waterlooville fans travelling to their FA Cup tie at Charlton, plus some rugger buggers heading to Twickenham. Arriving at Waterloo, the Havant & Ville fans strode across the concourse en masse singing "Come on you Hawks!"
On the walk from the tube station to the ground, called in at Five Guys for lunch. Then on to Clapton Craft, where imperial stouts were tricky to find but I managed to spot a couple and bought one of each for the game.
Met Paul and a couple of the other regulars on the grass path leading up to The Stray Dog. Called at the merchandise table where the man who'd requested my shirt for James six weeks ago, and threw a new one up to me at Kensington last week, sold me the scarf he'd lent me (I'd decided to buy it anyway, but it was just as well because the inside has slipped off centre so the logo on the outside looks a bit skew-whiff).
A few more regulars said hello as I passed them on my way along Scaffold 2. Most of the Brigata were in place behind the goal, joined by Andy and Dave, two guys both attending their first CCFC game for a while.
The Tons scored an early goal with a leaping header and made it two around the twenty minute mark. It wasn't long before AEK pulled one back but the Tons were soon back in the ascendant and were 4-1 in front at half time. The Brigata's full song repertoire got an airing. Alas, one guy, on his turn waving the iconic Spotted Dog flag, was standing in front of me and inadvertently cracked me over the head with the flag stick.
Early in the second half AEK got a second, one of their players dribbling through our defence and unleashing a magnificent finish. About halfway through the half Tons were awarded a penalty but our striker shot wide. In the closing minutes, we behind the goal all lined up with hands on each other's shoulders for a rendition of Somewhere Over The East End and CCFC, on cue, added two late goals for a 6-2 win.
One of the Brigata guys let a red flare off as we clapped the team off the pitch. Several more fans said goodbye to me as I walked back past Scaffold 2. Alas, I learned from Twitter on the train home that I'd missed out on the Gravy Ultras (our northern fans) handing out home made Guy Fawkes parkin.
