What's Another Year?
Jan. 2nd, 2021 12:47 amChristmas was quiet, naturally. Just watching TV and reading the books I got from Mum and Dad - Natalie Haynes' excellent looks at the women of Ancient Greek legend. Despite the lack of social interaction, it was nice to have a break from the normal routine, pig out on Christmas treats and cracking open Belgian Christmas ales every evening.
New Year's Eve night was a massive downer, as our ties to the European Union officially ended with a threadbare deal. I blasted out Ode To Joy at 11 pm when the severance became official, and posted it on Twitter and Facebook at the same time. Then sat up alone watching Withnail & I on Film4.
My mood darkened further today, as despite an impressive campaign that saw the song hit number one on the iTunes chart, the Amazon chart AND the 7digital chart, Comin' Over Here by Asian Dub Foundation featuring Stewart Lee failed to even make the fucking Top 40. That is just insane. Who would have thought that enough hordes of people would spend Christmas Day, and maybe Boxing Day, streaming and YouTubing Christmas songs in sufficient numbers to absolutely flood the charts? So the rebuke to the casual racists and anti-immigrationers that would have come from the song being a hit didn't happen.
Together with Karen Carney's departure from Twitter following a pile-on from the knuckle-draggers, just another reason to feel depressed in Brexit Bastard Britain. And the anti-Europeans will continue to spew hate on Twitter. And Monday is at the door, when I embark on an eight-week Puritan detox. Joyless times ahead, with nothing to look forward to. The earliest I can imagine me being back in football grounds or meeting friends again is August and that's just too far away to even think about.
Just feeling so alone in the world.
