Drop The Pilot
Sep. 30th, 2020 08:25 pmAnother trip to the Smoke for Fisher v Glebe last night. Excellent burger and chips in the hotel before the tube ride to the game. It being the ninth Fish game of a crazy September, I'd been feeling match-fatigued and lethargic before getting to the ground, and my mood didn't improve when Glebe scored an early goal, but the game turned out to be an absolute thriller. Approaching the half-hour, from a corner Christian Udo blasted the ball into the roof of the net to equalise. Just into the second half Jamie Yila put the Fish in front direct from a corner, then a few minutes later Michael Sarpong added a third. Some needle crept into the game after that, with a few feisty challenges and a Glebe player getting sin-binned. Fisher had a few shots go wide and drew some daring saves from the Glebe keeper. As we entered time added on, Glebe netted from a goalmouth scramble to give themselves hope, the fouls flew as the minutes went by, and one heavy challenge led to a fracas involving half the players from both sides, ending with one from each team going to the sin bin. Glebe's striving for an equaliser didn't pay off and the whistle went with Fisher victorious.
Streamed out of the ground alongside several of the ultras, all of us in a genial mood, most saying "See you Saturday."
Back at the hotel, with the sky now pitch dark, I attempted to put the window blind down but was unable. The cord holding the blind up was tied so firmly around the metal winders at the side that it would have taken a first-class Boy Scout to undo them all. I went downstairs to seek help, but a non-native-English-speaking cleaning lady said "Staff gone". Yes, ideally I should have guessed that the staff would leave at 10pm now that is pub closing time, and asked for help earlier, but I didn't think about dropping the blind until I was about to leave the hotel to the game, and after a few minutes' wrestling with the cords I had to give up and leave to make sure of getting to the game on time. So I had to sleep with the London night shining in through the window. To compound matters, I'd been hoping to catch the 11pm repeat of Duty Free, but was majorly brassed off to find the room telly's array of Freeview channels did not include Forces TV. Had to settle down to sleep as best possible. So, despite all the staff being very friendly and helpful, I had to decide with a heavy heart to stay elsewhere for the next midweek home game.
A spot of welcome news - the Leighton Town 100 Club draws for the closing months were made last week and I've won a prize.
