Sadeness Part 1
Mar. 12th, 2020 05:44 pmWatched England v Spain, their last game of the SheBelieves Cup last night, on telly. Laura Bassett and Kelly Smith were the studio pundits, they talked a lot of good sense and Laura looked absolutely lovely <3 but they were the only highlights, as England huffed and puffed but failed to deliver. Nikita Parris, one of Neville's favourites, was a persistent disappointment, constantly losing the ball. Spain's goal was admittedly beautiful but they were helped by our defence being all at sea. 1-0 to Spain it ended, leaving us third of four teams. I've been a Neville-sceptic for some months now and the debacle of this tournament now has me firmly convinced he's not the right manager for the Lionesses.
Woke up this morning with a bad case of the blues, partly down to the Lionesses' failings but also because of last night's game being in Dallas and my having been unable to make the trip (although, as my dad pointed out, with none of my friends having travelled this year it would have been a miserable and lonely night there after the defeat).
Had a busy morning training at work with a couple of big tasks to learn and people to meet so that kept my mind occupied most of the time.
But this afternoon was the funeral of my dear friend Sue, who was Mayor of Winchester when me ma was Mayor of Gosport with me as her consort. We drove to Winchester in the rain. There was no-one there we knew. The service was very nice, we heard a few interesting things we never knew about Sue's life. Her daughter Sarah and granddaughter Laura and a council colleague gave lovely tributes. Music played as a series of nice pictures of Sue appeared on the overhead screen. The service finished with Nat King Cole's Unforgettable.
At the buffet after we talked to Sarah and Laura who were both very nice, and touched that we'd come. I told Laura I remembered her coming along to events in the mayoral year, when she was just a wee lassie. Me ma told Laura about the special friendship Sue and I had had - "they used to flirt something rotten". Laura loved that. We mingled with a few of the past and present local councillors who were all glowing in their assessments of Sue being a lovely lady and caring passionately about social issues.
And then it was the drive back home. At least the rain had stopped.
Ah well, time to catch up with last night's Celebs Go Dating.
