Went down to the Axe on Tuesday evening for dinner and to try the new addition to their dessert menu, Eton Mess cheesecake, and the Brazil-Germany match.

A group of diners on the adjacent tables were discussing the World Cup; they spotted my Holland Unofficial Football World Champions T-shirt and for a while we all talked about how we thought the semis would pan out. A couple thought the Oranje would best Argentina, though another guy, after he'd asked me what the Unofficial World Championship was, said "You might need a blue and white T-shirt after tomorrow night". Most of them hoped Germany would beat Brazil, to the bemusement of one older chap; he wasn't convinced this prevailing sentiment among British footy fans was just because the Germans are a good footballing side, but accepted the idea that people viewed Brazil as having benefited from friendly officiating.

While we were eating, to the surprise of everyone in the restaurant bit Ryan the barman was relaying news of German goals galore. When the score reached 5-0 Ryan urged me to get next door to the public bar, where the telly was, saying he'd bring my Eton Mess there. The German performance the rest of the game was magnificent, accompanied by a couple of lovely summer berry ciders. None of us could believe Brazil had got such a comprehensive spanking at home.

Was looking forward to more of the same last night, and an Oranje win to set up two juicy derbies to end the tournament. Alas, of course, the match was utterly turgid, and Louis van Gaal used up all our substitutions leaving Cillessen in goal for the penalty shoot-out - no disrespect to the lad, he's a decent keeper in open play, but that was tantamount to forfeiting. The defeat felt inevitable.

Sat there for 20 minutes or so, numb, getting the reactions to my posts and from fans generally on Facebook and Twitter before dragging myself to bed.

Was zombified at work this morning, and feeling the emptiness all day. And mega frustrated this evening by my laptop still having serious problems, getting in the way of my trying to send an mp3 of a song to a friend (still no nearer getting it done after four sodding hours). At least Top of the Pops 1979 provided a bit of an antidote to the World Cup blues, with Sham 69, the Korgis, BA Robertson, the Boomtown Rats and online chat with fellow retro pop fans.
