Don't Stop Movin'
Mar. 22nd, 2014 09:45 pmTo Kenilworth Road for Luton v Chester. Everyone round where I passed was upbeat before the game, convinced the home defeat to Woking was just a blip and that the Hatters would be back on track today. Before the game the result of the fan vote on next season's colours was announced : orange had been chosen, by a margin of just 373. The guy behind me quipped "They were bribed by Easyjet." I had mixed feelings about this : I'd voted white, out of respect for it being the colour of the club through most of its history including Wembley '59, '88 and '09, but on the other hand the cool orange kit was part of why I fell in love with the Hatters as a 6-year-old, and keeping orange allows me to retain my double '1988 orange' connection.
Luton's performance during the first half was horrendously laboured. They were clearly missing Luke Guttridge and by the half hour mark I was thinking They're choking. We're going to end up in the bloody play-offs. Fortunately Chester were just as lacking in creativity and firepower.
In the 70th minute it all changed. Matt Robinson drifted in a cross from the deep that looped over the keeper and into the top corner of the net. After a moment of stunned disbelief the ground exploded in a mixture of euphoria and relief. The goal gave the Hatters impetus, they surged forward and on 80 minutes Andre wove through the Chester defence and fired in number two from close range. In stoppage time Benno added a third.
On the bus back to Leighton the consensus was "job done". One Hatter in the seat behind me, hearing I'd ended up in the area through getting a job in Milton Keynes, asked why I didn't support MK Dons. Most unusual for a Luton fan; most Hatters decry the very existence of that club and have no time for anyone who supports them.
Missed the bus home by a whisker so jumped in a taxi to make it back for The Voice. Gutted for poor Emily but delighted Sally went through. SALLY TO WIN!
